“Eat less processed food” – you hear it all the time. Today I discuss what that really means.
Some forms of processing, like freezing, to increase shelf life is not necessarily a bad thing. The problems lie with ultra-processing where multiple ingredients like fats, sugars and starches are mixed with other substances e.g. artificial colouring and flavourings to come up with some palatable food-like product. This ultra-processed “food” (if you can even call it that) is not health-promoting. Consumption has been linked to obesity and other non-communicable diseases. The trouble is we eat way, way too much of it. You might be shocked to find out how much – I was.
I hope this episode sheds some light on why avoiding or limiting your consumption of ultra-processed food is really worth doing.
