Apples for the Mind is an excellent, well-crafted and practical book about creating emotional balance, peak performance and lifelong wellbeing. Dr Nehmy’s point that mental health skills are generally poorly understood is a really important one. How do we look after our mental wellbeing in a way that can potentially help us prevent mental ill health? The main purpose of this book is to give us the knowledge and tools to do just that.
The book is divided into 20 chapters with each chapter looking at an aspect of mental wellbeing (e.g. Be Courageous, Not Perfect) and, where appropriate, gives the reader simple exercises to do. I genuinely learned something from this book about challenging some of the automatic thoughts I had, understanding why perfectionism is not always helpful and how to be a critical consumer of the media (including social media). Those lessons were not only helpful for me but very important for young adults finding their way in the world.
